“The project is scoping the requirements of UK institutional and subject repositories for a service that will reliably and uniquely identify individuals and institutions.

A prototype service is under development to test the various processes involved. This includes determining the most appropriate data format, setting up a test database, mapping data from different sources, populating the database with records and testing the use of the data.

This will provide important information about the future usefulness of a name authority service for institutional and subject-based repositories, and other applications beyond the repository sector.”

“The IESR has been developed to provide a registry of information about electronic resources that are of value to teachers, researchers and learners. The IESR project is part of JISC‘s Shared Services Programme.

The aim is to create a reliable source of information that other applications, such as portals, can freely access through machine-to-machine protocols, in order to help their end users discover resources of assistance to them.

The IESR contains information about the resources themselves, technical details about how to access the resources, and contact details for the resource providers. For resource providers the IESR will hold a master description of their electronic resources, to which other potential users of the resources may be directed.

The registry is held in an XML repository using Cheshire information retrieval software.”

“This project will develop a tool for ingesting complex collections of born-digital materials, with basic descriptive, preservation and relationship metadata, into a preservation repository. The proposal is based on needs identified by the JISC-funded Paradigm project and the Wellcome Library’s Digital Curation in Action project and is a key building block in our strategy to develop digital repository architectures which can support the development of digital collections. This tool will be tested on personal digital collections already accessioned by the partner institutions and will provide an open-source tool for use by others with similar requirements. The project will produce technical and user support documentation and promote the tool with relevant audiences. “

Brief project description:

The University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) Faculty at the University of Plymouth has a requirement to develop a repository which will meet the needs of a regional partnership and is capable of storing a range of materials.

There is a requirement for sharing good practice and making learning materials available to students in a manner which places students’ needs at the heart of their learning experience in both the college and work based learning environments. The UPC Repository will allow the sharing of materials across a network of colleges and allow staff access to a range of support materials. The lessons learned in delivering and using the UPC Repository across institutions would be transferable to other partnerships within HE and HE in FE.

• workflows involved in the storage of material from across multiple partner colleges in a digital repository
• published procedures and training and support materials
• system related documentation
• a case study on the process of creating a digital repository

The project will investigate issues around the deposition and preservation of software artefacts in repositories. It will develop guidelines for the preservation of software research outputs, in particular, considering the use of existing software repositories such as sourceForge. It will develop these guidelines from the partners’ experience in running a number of software repositories but in particular by monitoring and analysing in detail a particular case study which is a thematic software repository in the software engineering domain.
